New Here?

You Are Welcome at Good Shepherd.

Visiting a church for the first time can feel intimidating. You may wonder where to go, what to do, what to wear, whether your children will be welcome, or whether you will know how to follow the service.

At Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, you are warmly welcome. You do not need to have everything figured out before you come. You are welcome to enter quietly, listen, pray, sing as you are able, and receive the comfort of God’s Word.

We are a confessional Lutheran congregation gathered around Jesus Christ and His gifts in Word and Sacrament. Our worship follows the historic liturgy of the Church, with Scripture readings, hymns, prayer, preaching, and the Lord’s Supper.

Service Time

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church shares a pastor with Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Chatham. Because of this, our Sunday service time follows a quarterly rotation throughout the year.

At Good Shepherd in Amherstburg, the Divine Service is normally held according to the following schedule:

October through December: Sundays at 10:00 a.m.
January through March: Sundays at 1:00 p.m.
April through June: Sundays at 10:00 a.m.
July through September: Sundays at 1:00 p.m.

This rotation allows both congregations to gather for the Divine Service every Sunday.

For the most current weekly information, please check the homepage, our Facebook page, or contact Pastor Ferreira before visiting.

What to Expect

Our service is liturgical, which means it follows a historic and orderly pattern of worship. At Good Shepherd, we use the Lutheran Service Book, the hymnal used by many congregations of Lutheran Church–Canada and The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.

Most Sundays, we use Divine Service – Setting Three, beginning on page 184 of the Lutheran Service Book. This setting is often known as the Common Service, a form of the historic Western liturgy cherished by Lutherans for generations.

The service includes hymns, Scripture readings, prayers, a sermon, and the Lord’s Supper. The liturgy may be new to you, but you do not need to worry about knowing everything ahead of time. The bulletin will help you follow along, and you are welcome simply to listen and participate as you are comfortable.

The service is reverent and Christ-centred. We believe that worship is first of all about receiving what God gives to us: His Word, His forgiveness, His mercy, and His peace in Jesus Christ.

How Long Is the Service?

The Divine Service usually lasts about one hour. Services may be slightly longer on feast days or special occasions.

Are Children Welcome?

Yes. Children are very welcome at Good Shepherd.

We are glad when children are present in the Divine Service. They belong in the life of the Church and learn the faith by hearing God’s Word, praying, singing, and being with the congregation.

Parents should not feel embarrassed if their children make some noise. We understand that children are children, and we are thankful to have them with us.

The Lord’s Supper

We believe that the Lord’s Supper is a precious gift of Christ, in which He gives us His true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation.

Because receiving Holy Communion is also a public confession of faith and unity in doctrine, we ask visitors who are not members of a congregation of Lutheran Church–Canada or The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod to speak with the pastor before communing.

You are still very welcome to attend the service, hear God’s Word, pray with us, and come forward for a blessing if you wish.

What Should I Wear?

You are welcome to dress respectfully and comfortably.

Some people wear suits or dresses, while others dress more simply. You do not need special clothing to visit. Come as you are, and know that you are welcome.
